Celebrate Mother’s Day on Thursday, May 8th, 2008, from 11 am to 8 pm, as Tiara Festival celebrates the power of women, highlighting their struggles and successes through fashion and art.

 

Starting at 11 am, watch the colourful wedding costumes of women in a CULTURAL PARADE at LIUNA Station Grounds.

 

SHOW YOUR SUPPORT FOR ALL DIVERSE WOMEN IN OUR COMMUNITY AND CELEBRATE THEIR STRUGGLES AND SUCCESSES  BY WEARING YOUR OWN ETHNIC, TRIBAL OR TRADITIONAL WEDDING COSTUMES.  BRING YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILIES.  PLAY ANY MUSICAL INSTRUMENT TO SET THE FESTIVE MOOD.

 

From 11:30 am to 4:30 pm, doors will be OPEN TO THE PUBLIC at the Continental Express Ballroom where you can find handmade clothing, accessories and ornaments created by tribal and ethnic women around the world at the INTERNATIONAL ARTS & CRAFTS SHOW, presented by women entrepreneurs.

 

From 5 to 8 pm, witness the opulent history and tradition of women in the ticketed presentation of  MULTICULTURAL FASHION & ART SHOW and MUSIC & DANCE SESSIONS at the Continental Express Ballroom.

 

WITNESS COMPELLING STORIES of WOMEN AROUND THE WORLD AS WE PRESENT ART & FASHION AS SOCIAL MEDIUMS FOR CHANGE.  ENJOY THE MUSIC and DANCE with the beat of LATIN PLUS.

 

TICKETED:  $20 adult   $15 students ($10 if group of 10 min.)

A 30-minute fashion show will be presented at 6 pm featuring women of all ages. Grand Raffle Draw for ticket holders at 7 pm.  Grand Prize: $1500.00 original painting.  Prizes will be on display throughout the day. Tickets on sale until 7 pm.

 

Your ticket also entitles you to win prizes during the hourly raffles. Food and drinks will be provided by LIUNA Station.

 

Multicultural organizations, students and community agencies have been invited to participate.

History Of Soap

The earliest recorded evidence of the production of soap-like materials dates back to around 2800 BC in Ancient Babylon. A formula for soap consisting of water, alkali and cassia oil was written on a Babylonian clay tablet around 2200 BC.

 

The Ebers papyrus (Egypt, 1550 BC) indicates that ancient Egyptians bathed regularly and combined animal and vegetable oils with alkaline salts to create a soap-like substance. Egyptian documents mention that a soap-like substance was used in the preparation of wool for weaving.

Soap Making

 

Homemade SoapThe most common soap making process today is the cold process method, where fats such as rendered lard react with lye. Some soapers also practice other processes, such as the historical hot process, and make special soaps such as clear or transparent soap, which must be made with ethanol or isopropyl alcohol.

 

Soap makers sometimes use the melt and pour process, where a premade soap base is melted and poured in individual molds. While some people think that this is not really soap making, the Hand Crafted Soap Makers Guild does recognize this as a legitimate form of soap crafting.

 

Handmade soap differs from industrial soap in that whole oils containing intact triglycerides are used and glycerin is a desireable byproduct. Industrial detergent manufacturers commonly use fatty acids, which are detached from the gylcerol heads found in triglycerides. Without the glycerol heads, the detached fatty acids do not yield glycerin as a byproduct.
